Interdisciplinary Textile Design (ITD) is a progressive materials and context driven design programme.
ITD has been borne of a response to industry led innovations in materials development and the blurring of boundaries between specialisms within the creative industries. As with many innovations in current design, ITD champions the benefits of interdisciplinarity in the design process. The fusion of ideas with process paves the way for innovations in design. The fundamental course philosophy insists on sustained enquiry of four key areas: process, ideas, materials and context. This seeks to ensure that the responsibility of creativity is upheld with due consideration to issues of both purpose and market. It celebrates and encourages the artisanship of craft processes (print/fabrication) alongside latest technologies (robotics/electronics) yet always remains firmly embedded within 21st century design.
The programme engages students with exploratory and experimental edged approaches to material usage, associative technologies and their subsequent contextual application within the production of contemporary design.
