Sophie
“Sophie”, 2009

Sophie is an animation that encapsulates a part of society’s stigmas to mental health issues. If we were to change one simple factor, for instance a young child having imaginary friends and fantasy worlds to a young woman having imaginary visions, the tables change drastically. We are more likely to feel that a child's imaginary friends is something simply frivolous and part of the development of a young person. However, when a young woman still has these tendencies it is “clear”, to a wide consensus, that this is an indication that she is mentally unwell. This child like juxtaposition with a very serious issue should shock and encourage people to think about mental health issues in a broader manner.
